Protecting Your Future

Communicate with each other about all debts, income and spending habits. This is the first step to establish your new insurance needs as a couple.

New insurance considerations
Define your financial goals as a couple. Whether it be home ownership or a nest egg for retirement, start early. This is a vital part of planning your future together. Make sure to contact Social Security,  Iowa DOT and other organizations to make necessary name changes. Contact an insurance agency about combining auto insurance policies to save on your premium. When reviewing other insurance needs, consider family heirlooms, wedding rings and gifts. Below are some of the different types of insurance you may want to explore with your insurance agent.

Auto
For your protection, get the best insurance policy you can. Keep the policy in your vehicle. Remember, once you are married, to combine your plans for a discount.

Homeowners and renters
One of the last problems you want to encounter is the realization that you do not have enough coverage–or none at all. Loss from fire, flood, wind or theft can be devastating. Make sure you understand your policy. You will need to obtain additional coverage for specific items such as expensive equipment, artwork or jewelry.

Health
Health insurance is an absolute must, especially if you plan to start a family. Know what type of coverage you need and how much. It is wise to have insurance in place before the need arises because many will not cover pre-existing conditions. If you do plan to start a family right away, keep in mind that maternity coverage can vary dramatically from plan to plan.

Life and disability
Your livelihood depends on the income you generate for your family. Life and disability insurance is worth considering. Mortgage payments, tuition, childcare or simple daily expenses such as groceries–costs that continue even if your income is interrupted.

Choosing an agent
Select a reputable agency. Keep in mind that buying online may cost the same as it would through a local agent who is available to take care of your service needs. Always remember, it is better to have insurance and not need it, than to need it and not have it.
