Traditions

Certain customs have endured the years and may enhance your celebration.

Toasting
Before the wedding party is served, the best man proposes a toast. Everyone but the bride rises and drinks the toast. If dedicated to the couple, both should remain seated.

Throwing the bouquet
Although this highly-anticipated event usually occurs later, try to toss the bouquet while most guests are still present. All the single women gather and the bride tosses the bouquet over her shoulder. Whomever catches the bouquet is the next to be married.

Garter tossing
The groom removes the garter and tosses it to all of the single men. The same rules apply.

The order of dances
The order of dances is also a long standing wedding tradition. The first song should be the newlywed couple’s favorite.  The floor should be cleared and the lights dimmed.

1 Bride and groom.

2  Parents. The bride and her father, and the groom and his mother.

3  Switch. Bride dances with the groom’s father, and the groom with her mother.

4  Wedding party. All attendants join in.

5  Guests. Everyone else may enter.

If you don’t know how to dance, consider taking lessons during your engagement. Not only is dancing a part of most wedding receptions, but it’s also something you enjoy together for years to come.
